360-degree Camera Rig

The Background:

Sakowski Studios specialise in multimedia production offering new generation media in a variety of fields. In a world over saturated in media, the artists signature can get lost easily. Sakowski Studios is a style that shape shifts between many mediums and is still discernible as the artists signature.

The Problem:

For an upcoming music video shoot, Sakowski Studios approached Gestalt Group to design and build a camera rig capable of smooth 360-degree motion on an incredibly tight budget. The rig needed to be positioned and operated upright and inverted to capture the necessary shots.

The Solution:

The team at Sakowski Studios had already generated some conceptual ideas and we were bought in to select and further develop the concept, complete detailed mechanical design work, produce manufacturing drawings and manage construction with the nominated manufacturer.
Due to the tight budget constraints, the design was developed around up cycled/pre-owned materials, and limiting the use of new material. Specifically, we repurposed the headpost bearing assembly from an old BMX as the main bearing assembly, and diving weights as the counterweights.

The Outcome:

Sakowski Studios were impressed with the rig and the effects it allowed in them to achieve in the music video for Move by Concord Dawn feat. J Dubs. Check it the final edit here.
